Successful Completion of  ICADAM 2008

A very successful International Conference on Advanced Design and Manufacture (ICADAM) was held at the Treasure Island Hotel, Sanya, China on 14-16th January. The organizing committee received over 500 papers in the first round. 174 papers were finally selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the proceedings. The conference proceedings are in the process of publishing by a UK based well known science and engineering publisher in two separate books titled as “Global Design to Gain a Competitive Edge” and “Integrated Design and Manufacture to Gain a Competitive Edge”. As soon as the proceedings are published, these will be sent to all authors through surface mail. The organising committee is thankful to all authors, delegates of the conference, members of the advisory board, support staff of both NPU and Hainan University, China for making ICADAM 2008 a huge success.

About the ICADAM 2008

The globalisation of manufacturing industries leads to a thirst for rapid advancements in technological development and expertise in the fields of advanced design and manufacturing. In this scenario, both industry and the academia have an urgent need to equip themselves of latest knowledge and trend regarding design and manufacture. This conference solicits both cutting edge fundamental research and recent industrial application papers with a goal towards bringing together design and manufacture practitioners from academics, government organisations, and industry from all over the world. The conference aims to cover the recent advancement and trends in the area of design and manufacturing and to facilitate knowledge sharing, presentations, interactions, discussions on emerging trends and new challenges in design and manufacturing fields. The particular focus of this conference is on the understanding of the impact of distributed team based design and manufacture on research and industrial practices for global companies. Being the third conference in this theme since 2004, the aims of the conference are: (a) to become a regular major forum for the international scientific exchange on multi-disciplinary and inter-organisational aspects of advanced engineering design and manufacturing engineering; and (b) to provide opportunities in presenting and formalising the methods and means for industrial companies to design and manufacture successful products in a globally distributed team based environment.

Venue Location: Sanya

The ICADAM 2008 conference will be held at Sanya, Hainan, China.

Street of HaikouHainan is China's second largest island, located at the southern tip of China. It is a busy Special Economic Zone, one of China's most unspoiled natural regions and the centre of a fast-growing tourist industry. It is better known as the Chinese Hawaii. There are miles of sandy beaches, golf courses, verdant mountains, agricultural land and even unspoiled wildernesses.

Sanya is situated on the southernmost tip of Hainan Province and it has the tropical climate. Sanya BeechIt is the best place in China to enjoy the sand; sea and the Sun. Sanya possess a number of excellent harbours as well.

Therefore, Sanya is named the 'South Gate of China' to stress its importance while it plays a vital role in the life of the southern part of China in areas of the economy and politics to transportation. Sanya is a noted tourist resort with mountains, sea, river and city. The favourable climate is hot in summer but warm in the three other seasons so attracting large numbers of followers from both home and abroad every year. The whole of Sanya is related to the sea. Here you can enjoy a unique tropical oceanic landscape that is totally different from the other provinces of China. Sanya Bay, Yalong Bay and Dadonghai, all golden seaboards of Sanya, are some of the first choices for visitors to spend their holidays. Instead of a busy and exhausting journey, you can relax totally here by strolling along the beaches and breathing the fresh air.

Organisation Information

The conference is organised as one of the major activities of the FASTAHEAD project, a European project entitled "A Framework Approach to Strengthening  Asian Higher Education in Advanced Design and Manufacture" funded by Asia-Link programme.

The project aims to develop a framework solution to engineering higher education demands in Asia, by developing a new curriculum in Advanced Engineering Design and Manufacture for Asian and European MSc education, upgrading the skills of university teaching staff in Bangladesh, Pakistan and China, split training Asian PhD students in European Institutions, comparing educational policies / systems / programmes among various countries, and enhancing the overall management of Asian Universities. Recently Project's Leader Manager from University of Strathclyde (UK) and Partner Manager and other module development staff from Troyes University of Technology (France) have been invited as guest editors of a special issue of International Journal of Product Development (IPD) titled as “IT Based Proactive Design and Synthesis for X in Product Life-Cycle Design”.
